Speak your Book

What should you do if you have the gift of gab but get frustrated every time you sit down to write? Simple, stop writing and speak your book into creation.

Today’s assignment was created for those who want to write a book but are not confident about their writing skills. If this is you, don’t fret. Your writing process may be different from others but the outcome will be the same.

Assignment: Write an outline for your book. Each chapter will be based on a topic you will record in details. For this lesson, you will dictate one chapter of your book to see if this process will work for you better than traditional writing.

1. Take a voice recorder (save your money and use your smart phone’s voice recorder) and record yourself speaking about each topic. Save the recording and send it to a transcriber. Once the chapter have been transcribed you can either (1) go through each chapter and add to the material.

2. Or, use a dictation app like Dragon that will do the transcription for you. However, you must go through the transcription in order to ensure the app dictated your words correctly. Once the chapter have been transcribed you can either (1) go through each chapter and add to the material by fluffing it up.

Words to Know (and one I made up):

Transcriber: someone who makes an exact copy of a document, text, etc….

Fluff Up: a term I use to describe taking a transcript and formatting the sentence structure and wording to read more like a book and less like an interview.

Check List:

  • Hire a transcriber
  • Use a voice recorder, your computer, Smartphone, or a podcast service to record your book. Don’t spend money on an expensive recorder. Instead use what you already have available
